In Lord Dearing's interim review published in February 2007, he states:
'Any long term policy for languages must include a concerted effort to...learn about innovations in teaching; to have opportunities to develop... skills in using innovations.'

At a time when languages teaching is more challenging than ever, how can teachers truly “innovate”? In our global environment it is surprising that some of our students do not want to engage with a language – or is it? How relevant are our current methods of teaching to the students in the classroom? Do they find the step back to basic language and tired topics old-fashioned and boring? The answer is often yes – many 11-14 year olds find the current methods of language learning slow, boring and tedious. As languages teachers, you already know the benefits that mastering another language can bring so how can we help you to inspire a new generation of learners?
Paul Howard, a languages teacher at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar school in Blackburn, has been using the Michel Thomas Method successfully in his school and has developed a range of print and electronic resources to support his teaching.
In Lord Dearing’s review, reference is made to the way Paul Howard uses the methodology in his classroom:
" for example in a Blackburn Grammar School,
a deliberate attempt is made to use cognates and to operate bilingually
in the classroom with considerable success and motivated learners."
